How pins differ from tabs and Favorites

Sval has three ways to keep a site, each for a different kind of use.

  • Tabs are what you’re doing now. A tab belongs to one Workspace and lasts until you close it.
  • Favorites are links you keep, in folders in the Favorites menu. Opening one opens a new tab.
  • Pins are the few sites you live in, such as your mail and your calendar. Each is its own page, one click away in every Workspace.

Pinning doesn’t make a new kind of thing. A pin is a Favorite marked to show in the pins row. That’s why pins sync, rename, sit in folders, and export as Favorites do. Unpinning leaves the Favorite where it was.

A pinned Favorite leaves the Favorites menu while it’s pinned, so each site shows in one place.

Clicking a pin shows the pin’s own page. It doesn’t open a new tab each time, and the page never shows in the list of tabs. So the pin always has a page to come back to.

Coming back to a pin never reloads it. A reload would throw away a half-written email. The pin goes back to its saved page when you ask, with the refresh button on its tile or Back to saved page in its menu. The only times it goes back on its own are when you close it and when it’s put to sleep because your computer runs low on memory.

The saved page never changes on its own either. It changes only when you choose Save current page as this pin or Edit address…. A pin can’t end up saving a sign-out page.

A link in a pin to another site opens in a Peek over the pin. A link to another address on the same site, such as from app.fastmail.com to www.fastmail.com, stays in the pin. The pin keeps showing its own site, so its icon always tells you what’s behind it. You can keep the page from the Peek as a tab.

The same pin shows in every Workspace unless you limit it. Each Workspace has its own page for it, signed in with that Workspace’s sign-ins. In an isolated Workspace, the same Fastmail pin can show your work account while your other Workspaces show your personal one.
