Sync

Sval syncs through a folder you choose, encrypted with a key only your devices have. Settings › Sync and devices holds the folder, this device’s name, adding a device, and the sync key.

When no folder is chosen, the card reads “Sval saves your Workspaces on this device only. To sync them, choose a folder your devices share.”

  • Choose folder… opens a folder picker. The folder you choose becomes this device’s sync folder. It reads Change… once a folder is chosen, and Choose another… when Sval can’t find its files in the folder.
  • The folder’s name and its full path show once a folder is chosen. A folder in a cloud service Sval recognizes, like iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive, is named by the service and the folder.
  • Show in Finder opens the folder (Show in File Explorer on Windows, Show in Files on Linux).
  • Use this folder again shows while Sval can’t reach the chosen folder. It tries the folder again once you’ve reconnected it.
  • Stop syncing takes this device off the folder. Every Workspace stays on the device.
  • On a Mac, a note says Sval keeps what unlocks your sync key in your Mac’s Keychain, as “Sval secrets”.
  • On a computer with no keyring, a note says Sval keeps your sync key in your Sval profile.

Under the buttons, the sync readout says how sync is going, with the same words as the sync indicator at the bottom of the panel.

  • Sync now syncs straight away. While it runs, the readout says Syncing…. If it fails, the readout says Couldn’t sync.
  • The readout’s own buttons are the sync indicator’s, listed below.
  • This device’s name is the name your other devices show next to history and agent Workspaces from this device. It doesn’t sync.
  • Sync with another device opens the steps for adding a device. It shows once a sync folder is chosen. Before then, the card says Choose a sync folder first. and offers Go to Sync.
  • This device shows a code gives this device’s key to another one.
  • The other device shows a code takes the key from another device.
  • Back goes to the step before. It’s hidden while a code is shown or Sval is looking for one.
  • The first step names the sync folder, which the other device needs too.
  • Show code makes a one-time code of 12 characters in three groups. It works for an hour, and a countdown shows the time left.
  • Copy copies the code.
  • Cancel code takes the code back.
  • When the other device joins, the page reads Code used. Your devices are syncing.
  • The first step names the sync folder, which both devices need.
  • Next goes to the code. When Sval finds your sync key in the folder, from when it was installed on this computer before, it joins with that key and asks for no code.
  • Type the code it shows takes the code, in upper or lower case, with or without dashes.
  • Join looks for the code in the sync folder. Sval keeps looking until the code arrives.
  • Stop stops looking.

Advanced shows once a sync folder is chosen.

  • Save a backup opens Back up your sync key, with the key, Copy, Print…, and Save to a file…. Sval offers the same dialog when it makes a new key. You haven’t saved a backup. shows until you copy, print, or save it.
  • Set up sync again makes a new sync key, after you confirm. Your other devices stop syncing until you give each one a new code, and the old key can’t read the folder anymore.
  • Restore from a backup takes a backed-up key. Restore checks it against the Workspaces in the sync folder, then uses it.

Save a backup and Set up sync again show only on a device that syncs.

The sync indicator sits at the bottom of the panel when a sync folder is chosen. Selecting it opens Settings › Sync and devices.

  • Sync needs access when the system won’t give Sval the sync key. Allow Access (Try Again on Windows) asks again.
