Troubleshooting and data collection
Feedback and crash reports leave your computer only when you send them, and go to Sval’s own server.
The Send Feedback form
Section titled “The Send Feedback form”Send Feedback, at the bottom of the panel, opens the form. In the menu bar, Help › Send Feedback… opens it too. Some error messages have a Send Report… button, which opens the form with a line about the error.
- The message box takes your message. Send needs at least 10 characters.
- Email (optional) is for a reply. Nothing else in the report identifies you, and Sval’s server doesn’t keep your IP address.
- Sent with your feedback lists each part of the report, with its size and the total. Each part has a box and View, which shows exactly what the part sends. Back returns to the list.
- Cancel closes the form and throws your draft away.
- Send sends the report. It reads Sending… while it sends, and Send Again after a failure.
Closing the form any other way keeps your draft until you quit Sval. Once the report is sent, the form says Thanks, your feedback was sent., with a reference, and Close closes it.
The parts of the report
Section titled “The parts of the report”- Sval version and your system is always sent.
- Sval’s error log holds recent warnings and errors written by Sval and by the browser’s own code, without addresses, file paths, or names.
- Sval’s state says whether sync is working, how many Workspaces, groups, tabs, and pins you have, your protection settings, and how long Sval has been running. It holds no names, titles, or addresses.
- Browser settings you’ve changed lists each setting that isn’t at its default, with its value. A setting that holds text, such as your home page, shows only as “(changed)”.
- Installed extensions lists each extension’s name, ID, version, whether it’s on, and whether it works with Sval. It doesn’t send the extensions’ files or settings.
- Graphics card and driver names your graphics card, its driver version, which hardware acceleration features are on, and how many displays you have, with their scaling.
- Crash list shows when you’ve had a crash in the last three days. It holds the id and time of each crash.
- A crash snapshot is listed for each of those crashes. It’s a copy of the crashed process’s memory and the libraries it had loaded, and may include parts of pages you had open. A crash already sent from its dialog shows Sent.
Every part except crash snapshots starts checked. A part that would take the report over 25 MB says Too large to send.
Crash reports
Section titled “Crash reports”- The Sval Crash Reporter dialog opens after Sval crashes. Its box for telling Sval about the crash starts unchecked, and so does Include the address of the page I was on. Sval sends the report only when you check the first box. The dialog remembers your last choice.
- The crashed tab’s page opens in a tab that crashed. Send an automated crash report so we can fix issues like this starts unchecked. Restore This Tab reloads the page, and sends the report if the box is checked.
The log file
Section titled “The log file”Sval keeps its warnings and errors, and the browser’s own, in
sval-log.txt in its data folder. The log never includes a Workspace,
group, or tab name, a web address, a file path, or a secret. When the file
is full, Sval moves it to sval-log-old.txt and starts a new one.
About Sval in Settings › Advanced
Section titled “About Sval in Settings › Advanced”- Diagnostics log level chooses how much Sval writes to the browser console: Off, Errors, Warnings, Info, Debug, or Everything. It starts at Warnings. The log file keeps warnings and errors whatever you choose.
