Allow video and audio on a site

Out of the box, sites are on Ask first: nothing plays, sound or silent, until you allow it. The media button in the address bar does that for one visit. The site settings menu saves a choice for the site.

You open a Roon support video and it doesn’t start. Later, you want a music site you trust to always play.

  1. Look for the media button next to the address. It lights up when the page tried to play.
  2. Select the media button.

The tab reloads and the page’s video and audio can play. Select the button again to stop them for the rest of the visit.

  1. In the address bar, select the Site settings arrow next to the site controls.
  2. Under Video and audio, choose Always allow, Ask first, or Always deny.
  3. Close the menu.

When you choose Always allow, the tab reloads as the menu closes, so the page can play.

  1. Open Settings › Sites.
  2. Under Defaults, in Allow sites to play video and audio, choose Always allow, Ask first, or Always deny.
  • On Ask first, a click elsewhere on the page doesn’t count as allowing media. Only the media button does.
  • The media button’s tooltip says what it will do, such as “Click to allow for this visit”.
  • While a page shares your screen or uses your camera or microphone, you can’t stop its video and audio.
  • A site’s choice syncs to your other devices. So does the default.
  • On an address like nas.example.com, the menu’s title picks whether the choice covers that address alone or all of example.com.
