Import from another browser
Import reads the browsers on this computer and brings over their open tabs, bookmarks, and history. Each profile, Space, or Tab Group becomes a Workspace, and bookmarks become Favorites.
You’ve used Chrome with a Work profile and a Home profile for years. You want both in Sval, each as its own Workspace.
- Open Settings › Workspaces.
- Under Import and export, select Import data.
- Check each browser you want to import from.
- Optional: under each browser, uncheck what you don’t want, or rename a Workspace.
- Select Import.
- When the import finishes, select Done.
The dialog says what arrived: how many Workspaces and favorites, and whether your history came too.
In the menu bar, File › Import From Another Browser… opens the same dialog. When you first set up Sval, it offers the same choices as a step.
Details
Section titled “Details”- Sval can import from Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Arc, Dia, Safari, Orion, Firefox, and Zen. It lists the ones it finds on this computer, and checks the one you used last.
- Each browser’s row shows what it holds. Select the arrow on a checked row to show or hide its choices.
- Each profile becomes a Workspace. So do Arc and Zen Spaces, Vivaldi and Edge Workspaces, and Safari Tab Groups. Arc and Zen Spaces keep their color and emoji.
- Isolated next to a Workspace gives it its own cookies and sign-ins. See Isolate a Workspace.
- Tab groups stay grouped, with their colors. Arc and Zen folders become groups too.
- Arc’s Favorites and Zen’s Essentials become pins, and their splits become Splits.
- Under Choose how to import, bookmarks go Into Favorites, into a Workspace of their own with the name you give it, or not at all with Don’t import.
- Also import history from a browser brings its recent history.
- From Arc, Archive tabs you haven’t used, like Arc did turns on Archive idle tabs with Arc’s time. Tabs Arc archived go to History, under Archived tabs.
- Dia keeps its open tabs encrypted, so only its bookmarks and history import. To bring its tabs, choose Bookmark All Tabs… in Dia, then import that folder into a Workspace.
- Sval doesn’t import passwords. When a browser you check has saved passwords, the dialog shows how to export them and import them into your password manager. Select Show steps to see them.
- Sval only reads the other browser’s data. It doesn’t change it.
If something goes wrong
Section titled “If something goes wrong”- Can’t read Chrome while Chrome is open. Quit Chrome, then try again. On Windows, Sval can’t read the tabs of a running Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Vivaldi. The same line shows for Arc when Sval can’t read it. Quit the browser, then open the import dialog again.
- To import from Safari, allow Sval in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Full Disk Access. Select Open System Settings, turn on Sval, then come back to the dialog.
- Couldn’t open Chrome’s data. Select Try Again, or export your bookmarks from that browser as an HTML file and select Import Bookmarks File….
- Couldn’t read Chrome’s data. Sval didn’t understand the browser’s files. Select Import Bookmarks File…, or Send Report… so the problem can be fixed.
