Search
Sval searches with the engine you choose when you first set it up. You can change it at any time in Settings › Search and Launcher. The address bar, the Launcher, and the home page’s search field all search with it.
The search engines
Section titled “The search engines”When you first set up Sval, the Choose a search engine step lists these engines, each with a line about it:
- DuckDuckGo is the default.
- Startpage
- Brave Search
- Kagi needs an account. Choosing it shows Sign in to Kagi under it.
- Bing
- Ecosia
- Qwant
- Perplexity
- Wikipedia searches Wikipedia only, in your language.
On a device you add to sync, the step reads Your search engine and starts on the engine your other device uses.
Settings › Search and Launcher
Section titled “Settings › Search and Launcher”Default search engine
Section titled “Default search engine”- The menu sets the engine that searches when you type something that isn’t an address. It lists the engines above and any you’ve added.
Your default search engine syncs to your other devices.
The Kagi card shows while Kagi is your default search engine, or while a Session Link is saved.
- Sign in to Kagi opens Kagi’s sign-in in a new window. It shows while you’re signed out.
- Signed in to Kagi. shows once you are.
- The line under it says how private windows sign in to Kagi: with Privacy Pass and how many searches are left, with your Session Link, or not yet.
- Check again asks Kagi again whether your plan includes Privacy Pass. It shows when Kagi said it doesn’t.
- Kagi Session Link takes the Session Link you copy from Kagi. Save keeps it on this device, and Clear removes it. The line under the field reads Saved. or Not set. The field shows only when your plan has no Privacy Pass, or when a link is saved.
Your Kagi sign-in, Privacy Pass searches, and Session Link stay on the device. Each device signs in to Kagi on its own.
Additional search engines
Section titled “Additional search engines”- Add search engine opens the Add Search Engine dialog.
- The list shows your search engines and their keywords. Typing a keyword and a space in the address bar searches with that engine once.
The Add Search Engine dialog
Section titled “The Add Search Engine dialog”- Search engine name is required.
- URL with %s in place of search term is the address of a search, with %s where the words go. It’s required.
- Keyword (optional) is a short word that picks this engine in the address bar.
- Advanced shows two more fields: POST data with %s in place of search term (leave empty for GET) and Suggestions URL with %s in place of search term (optional).
- Add Engine adds it.
Search engine suggestions
Section titled “Search engine suggestions”- Show search suggestions lets your search engine suggest searches as
you type. Under it:
- Show search suggestions in address bar results puts them in the Launcher’s Search suggestions section.
- Show search suggestions before browsing history in address bar and home page results moves them above History.
- Search suggestions in private windows shows them in private windows too.
Launcher sections
Section titled “Launcher sections”Address Bar and Home Page
Section titled “Address Bar and Home Page”These checkboxes choose which kinds of results the address bar, the Launcher, and the home page’s search field show. Open tabs turns the Launcher’s Open tabs section on or off.
Private windows
Section titled “Private windows”A private window searches with your default search engine. With Kagi, a private window never uses your Kagi sign-in. It signs in with Privacy Pass when your plan includes it, so Kagi knows you’re a subscriber but not which one. Each search spends one Privacy Pass search.
